1861 - Julia Ward Howe penned the song "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
1889 - Astronomer Edwin Hubble was born. Hubble discovered and developed the concept of an expanding universe. In 1924 he proved the existence of galaxies other than our own.
1925 - Robert Francis Kennedy was born in Brookline, MA.
1928 - The historic Boston Gardens opened.
1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis ended. The Soviet Union removed its missiles and bombers from Cuba and the U.S. ended its blockade of the island.
1962 - Mickey Mantle was named the American League Most Valuable Player for the third time.
1977 - Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Steve Largent began his NFL streak of 177 consecutive game receptions.
1982 - Seven-year-old Drew Barrymore hosted "Saturday Night Live."
1984 - The 50-billionth McDonald's hamburger was made.
1992 - A fire seriously damaged the northwest side of Windsor Castle in England.
1995 - Princess Diana admitted being unfaithful to Prince Charles in an interview that was broadcast on BBC Television.
1998 - Forty-six states agreed to a $206 billion settlement of health claims against the tobacco industry. The industry also agreed to give up billboard advertising of cigarettes.
2005 - The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky was dedicated and opened to the public.
2006 - Legendary director Robert Altman passed away at the age of 81.

1966 - The musical, "Cabaret," opened on Broadway.

1984 - Michael Jackson received a star on the Hollywood Walk-Of-Fame.
1987 - "Sign 'O' The Times," Prince's third movie, opened.
1994 - David Crosby got a liver transplant.
1995 - Whitney Houston hit number one on the pop singles chart with "Exhale (Shoop Shoop.)"
1997 - Kenny G. received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
2007 - The funeral for Dr. Donda West, the mother of Kanye West, took place.
