- Become a fan of fans. That’s because moving air is more effective at removing sweat from your skin than cold air. When sweat evaporates, it takes your body heat with it! So, install fans in areas that’ll increase air circulation in your home – like in windows, on ceilings, or by an open basement doorway.
- Change your light bulbs. Switch your old incandescent bulbs to more energy-efficient, compact fluorescents. Experts say those older bulbs are basically “mini heaters,” which counteract the cold air blowing from fans and air conditioners. However, compact fluorescent bulbs emit 75% less heat.
- Shield your windows. Studies show that nearly half of a home’s heat comes through the windows – especially those that face east or west. So, hang light-colored curtains and blinds, that’ll reflect sunlight away from your home. Darker colors may provide more shade, but they’ll actually pull in more heat.
- Cover your bed in cotton linens. That’s because cotton’s a “breathable fiber,” that allows body heat to escape. Research has shown that you’ll have an easier time falling asleep if your body has a chance to cool down to room temperature, rather than stifle under the sheets, trapped in your own body heat.
- You can stay cool this summer with a quick shower. It sounds obvious, but doctors say anything that puts water in touch with your skin will cool you down – whether you drink it, or pour it over your head. That’s because water simulates sweating, and just like sweating, when the water evaporates from your body, the cooler you’re going to feel.
